5 Awesome Backyard & Rooftop Airstreams

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

You might want to move out of your house and into one of these aluminum backyard pads.

After a life on the road, some Airstreams now live a quiet and refined life of retirement in a backyard (or on a rooftop). While they might not be traveling, these campers have been lovingly turned into guest houses, party pads, or even full-time homes.

Mileece Petre is a a sonic artist who makes music out of plants. If this isn’t cool enough, she lives partly out of a garage converted into a living room and partly out of an Airstream parked behind her mother’s house. The Airstream acts as her bedroom and music studio and is surrounded by plants and water features.

2. The Dawn Treader in Virginia sits near a floating deck and can be rented on Airbnb.

“The Dawn Treader at Cair Paravel”

Anyone who names an Airstream after a Narnian sailing ship is on my list. This beautiful 32 foot Airstream (available on Airbnb) looks like it’s sailing through the trees of this farmstead in Standardsville, Virginia.

The camper has its own deck with fire pit and lounge chairs, a fully stocked kitchen, dining space, a sofa that converts into a bed and a master bedroom with bathroom and shower. The property also has a seasonal salt water pool and year-round hot tub.

3. The Airstream at Future Farm sits on a backyard farm in Portland, Oregon.

I actually stayed in this Airstream a few years ago when it was available on Airbnb and it was a totally unique experience. The Airstream sits on a farm in Portland, Oregon and blends nearly seamlessly with the trees, vines and vegetable gardens.

The Airstream is frequented by the local cats and ducks who want to enjoy the comfortable bed and wood burning fireplace on rainy Portland days. It also has a simple covered deck that protects the stove’s stock of logs.

4. This Airstream is set near the Mexico border.

Located in Cameron Park, Texas, this Airstream is located on a two-acre gated property full of pets.

The interior is decorated with artsy details, has a queen bed and a full bathtub. It also has its own private patio, grill, outdoor shower, outdoor bath and laundry room.

5. You can rent these Retro Rocket “Bedrooms” with a view of the city of Bristol.

While these Retro Rockets are not technically Airstreams, the aircraft-inspired campers built in Great Britain had to be included on this list.

Three of these campers are perched on top of the Brooks Guesthouse in Bristol in the UK—all having been lifted to the top of the building by a crane.

Each camper has beds with goose down pillows and duvets, sitting areas, bathrooms and storage areas for clothes. Views of Bristol can be enjoyed from all three of these cool hotel bedrooms.
