Custom Build RV Shelf Organizers To Keep Your Stuff Secure

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

“Caution, items may shift during flight.”

Ever heard that phrase before? Typically reserved for air travel, it’s funny that you don’t hear that much in an RV even though the principal holds true.

There are entire RV product lines devoted to helping keep your stuff where you left it. But why buy what you can make (or have made)? It tends to be more gratifying than a trip to the store. This RV shelf organizer design is something worth considering if you’re in the market for some customized RV storage space inside your RV.

RV Shelf Organizers

RV shelf organizers

This clever idea comes from Diane on iRV2 forums. Diane and her husband teamed up to create this clever storage RV shelf from just a few pieces of wood, plastic containers, and a dowel rod. The result is a functional and practical space for storing whatever you desire. This design is easily scaled to fit your choice of containers.

Tools needed

  • Saw (Mitre, Table, or Circular)
  • Drill
  • Drill bits for dowel and fasteners

Materials needed

How to build RV shelf organizers

The best bet is to start with the containers first. Purchase a few that suit your storage needs and size requirements. Then build the shelf around it. In the photo, they chose containers with handles to thread the dowel rod through. Convenient but not necessarily needed if the outer RV shelf organizer is built to fit the containers in.

In lieu of the dowel rod, Quirky Loopits could be used to stretch across the front of the box instead. With the array of storage containers available, an RV shelf organizer could be built to really any dimensions.

In this case, it was mounted under a cabinet which has some size constraints. We have also seen these mounted over the main entry door, next to the recliner, and other unused wall space.

We are always on the lookout for interesting ways to keep valuable space in an RV organized and clutter-free! If you have any comments or thoughts on RV shelf organizers, please submit a comment below, we would love to hear from you!

  1. Simple, elegant, solution to a timeless problem/question; ‘How do you organize and contain chaos? I dig this idea. I can see one improvement I can make already!

  2. I use spring tension curtain rods to block stuff from falling out of cabinets if opened at an angle and use them across the hallways to hang clothes that are wet. You can also use those to separate areas with shower or regular curtains for privacy if you do not have doors. They come in all sizes so they are great and since their in metal I have one across my cooktop/sink area so nothing will slip off onto the floor. I have an 1989 Roadtrek Versatile. Happy camping to all.
