Prepare Campfire Hotdogs and Meals for a Large Group with a….Rake

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

Ever cook for a large group on a campsite? If you have then you know about the trials and tribulations of feeding everyone using portable stoves and utensils. We think this funny, yet clever idea for cooking campfire hotdogs, sausages, or anything skewered is a wonderful way to handle the burden of large group meal preparation. Aside from the fact it is awkward and humorous to consider, you cant fight the simplicity and logic behind it.

The first step is to grab yourself a metal tine leaf rake. If you have one laying around all the better. Next you may consider clipping the bent ends off the rake to make items easier to get on and off the skewer. But only if you dont intend to use it as a rake again! Then moments later you can be sitting next to the fire cooking dinner for your group with one hand and playing cards or having a sip of a refreshment with the other!

Some may be more interested in making kabobs or other skewered recipes (we certainly are). We found several great ideas at AllRecipes.com. Our personal favorites are the Spicy Lime Grilled Prawns and Honey Chicken Kabobs.

We really find this concept for preparing campfire hotdogs and meals for large groups to be useful for several reasons. First, we finally have a use for that rake in our garage that never gets used. Secondly, if you have kids around your campsite then they find this method of cooking captivating. Our kids are constantly begging to hold the rake and want to help put the items on the tines. Lastly, this can make meal preparation a breeze for an otherwise labor intensive process of feeding your campers!

The biggest thing to watch out for is the construction of the metal. Steer clear of any metal rake that is galvanized or painted. They can possibly be toxic if used to prepare food.
