This 1974 Volkswagen Got Restored For A Charming Road Trip

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

Driving cross-country in a classic Volkswagen campervan comes with its own set of challenges. Youtube user Clark Underwood and his wife Hillary found this out the hard way – from buying it and realizing there was more interior work that had to be done – to getting a flat tire, and losing their one & only key on a four-hour hike one day. But despite running into problems along the way they achieved their long-awaited dream of making (what they called) a “Von Voyage”.

Westbound, they traveled from Oklahoma towards California, passing through the Grand Canyon, the towering trees of Sequoia National Park, and finally making it to see the world-class waterfalls of Yosemite. They had zero experience in maintenance and repair work, but through trial-and-error, were able to completely fix up the inside, repaint the exterior (after being turned down by local shops) and fix most problems along the way. That is, until they needed one simple $7 part that made the bus undriveable and later had to tow the VW home.

All-in-all, the charming video they put together shows that it was completely worth the effort. Check it out below – and make sure to adjust the settings quality to 1080p HD:
