12. The Home of Dashiell Hammett and Sam Spade – San Fransisco, CA

Dashiell Hammett lived in this building at 891 Post Street in San Francisco from 1926 until 1929.

His first three novels, Red Harvest, The Dain Curse, and The Maltese Falcon  were written here in his tiny fourth floor apartment.

He even modeled the apartment of the gritty gumshoe detective Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon after the very space where the book was conceived.
