Recently while complaining about the lack of flexibility during the preparation in our RV kitchen, it was brought to my attention this idea from Oasis Concepts. They have engineered a ruggedly built RV kitchen island that folds up to only 5-inches wide for storage. The build quality is far above other units I have used in my sticks and bricks home. Its hardy enough to be used outdoors or indoors as it has a stainless steel frame with high quality casters with a lock.
The folding process also feels deliberate and controlled as a well built item like this should. At a height of 35″ its great for many tasks around the RV. The obvious kitchen uses and outdoor cooking, but more interestingly we have used it for setting our laptop or Ipad up and watching movies, a mobile cart for mods and repairs around the RV, and for a convenient place to process the laundry. The Oasis Concepts RV kitchen island also has a solid hardwood top and shelves. In addition they have also added a drain trough around the top edge (much like a high end cutting board). The RV kitchen island has 28 hinges on it which is what allows it to open in fold in seconds with ease. Once opened you will gain around 4 square feet of surface to work with.
We looked all over our RV for ways to store it. We considered the pantry next to the fridge, next to the washer/dryer, and even outside in the RV basement but decided to keep it more readily available. We simply purchased a set of hooks that we fastened to the cabinet by the entry so we could stow this unit snugly against the wall. Then we installed ball bungies at base which we tie off the bottom to keep it secured during transit.
