There’s a lot to see off paved roads. Especially in Iceland, where only one main highway circles the island and much of the volcanic landscape is rugged and unexplored.
Photographer Stefan Forster wanted to experience everything the country’s surreal backcountry has to offer, and with the help of a few companies, built this badass 4×4 off-road camper on a Toyota Hilux truck.
Stefan dubbed it the Expedition V1, or Úlfur, which is Icelandic for “wolf.”
The vehicle took a year to build, with the help from companies including Geocar, Hurter Offroad, and Arctic Trucks Iceland.
It’s built to go anywhere, anytime. Equipped with heavy duty wheels, a TJM snorkel, and protection for its underbelly, the Expedition V1 can make it over even the most challenging types of terrain. You can even drive it through water!

It’s just as impressive on the inside. The interior was custom-made with a small kitchen area, including a sink and drawers for storage.
The vehicle fits about five adults comfortably. It includes a seating area to relax and mattress that can sleep two.
The camper was custom built for Stefan’s journeys—including his trip through the backcountry of Iceland, which he filmed and shared in this remarkable video. Check it out!
