Tips For Replacing RV Awnings And Slide Toppers, Plus A Special Discount And $300 Giveaway!

This post was updated on March 27th, 2024

If we had to choose our very favorite DIY RV Project, it might just be slide topper or awning fabric replacement. The math is simple:

Surprisingly Easy + Big $avings + Superior Results = Maximum DIY Satisfaction

Besides the cost savings over hiring a professional, the best thing about doing the job yourself is a noticeable increase in quality. The goal of most DIY projects is to equal the level of work performed by a pro. But this is one job where we can almost always surpass them.

That’s because most shops typically install original equipment (OEM) fabric. That’s the same mediocre fabric that caused the problem in the first place. The two most popular manufacturers use material that tends to come apart prematurely.

When our first slide topper needed replacing in 2012, we researched on our favorite online RV user forums, and read very positive things about Tough Top Awnings. We bought our fabric from them and it was immediately obvious that it was much better than the original. Over 3 years later it’s still like new and showing no signs of wear. We’ve since replaced both of our other toppers with the same heavy-duty fabric.

Between the savings on labor ($100+ per hour is common at many RV repair shops) and the lower cost of the Tough Top fabric, the total cost works out to about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of hiring a pro. As an added bonus, the job is surprisingly easy for even a novice DIY RVer. Awning fabric replacement is a little more involved, but still easily manageable when you know what to do.

Awning & Slide Topper Replacement Is Easier Than You Might Think

As DIYers, the one thing we hate most is paying someone else to do a job that we could easily have managed ourselves, especially when we realize that we could have done it better and saved a ton of money in the process!
