RV Bed Idea – Space Saving Headboard

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

This idea was introduced to me recently as an idea for my home and I instantly was more interested in it as a RV bed idea. This actually could serve three purposes in an RV. It could of course be your headboard, also serve as a window blind if your bed backs up to a window like most of them do, and also serve as a great place for bed time item storage especially if you added more cubby holders. I can see making this into two parts and being able to tie them back when not in use. Its an incredible concept and one I intend to see if I can get made. I am pretty good with my hands but I think this one may be outside my wheelhouse. Unfortunately the women in my life have refused my multiple requests to give it a try. I couldn’t find much information on a RV bed headboard product like this so my assumption is they are limited mostly to custom made versions for now. If you happen to have an accomplished seamstress in your network of friends and get one made for yourself I would love to see a few pictures of a step by step and a finished product. Post it in our forums or send us an email through our about us page.

After contacting a custom window treatment business locally it seems that these types of businesses can produce this for a somewhat hefty cost in my opinion. I sent her a photo and she quoted me $175 if I wanted standard quality fabric in one color. If anyone knows of a better way then please leave a comment below.

  1. You can do this new-sew, using fusible webbing tape and an iron. (Stitch Witchery is a well-known and reliable brand.)

    To get you started:

A single roll is about $3 to $5 and has 20 yards. I think that would be enough.

It’ll make a fat seam instead of a slim one, but it would certainly work!

If you want the quilted look (which would be a good light-blocker, plus it would look cozy and “upholstered”), you might look at thrift shops for a blanket you can cut up; that would probably be cheap.

Or, if you find a set of quilted placemats, you could overlap and fuse them; if they have matching napkins, turn them into the pockets.

Or contact a tailor / alterations person, or a dressmaker. They would probably charge a lot less.
Another idea: contact some church’s ladies group, and promise a donation of $x to their favorite cause if one of their members will sew it up for you (you provide materials, of course).

(not to mention–this is the easiest of sewing–fold over the edge and stitch along the top. It’s a perfect starter project, and since you’re the one sort of fired up about it, I think you should use this project to teach yourself a new basic skill. Heck, my brother the Army sergeant sews his own Velcro tabs onto his uniform–don’t tell me he’s not manly!)

  2. The fabric reminds me of a quilted bedspread I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond on clearance for $20 (twin size – could make at least three of that size out of it, maybe 4). Add the tabs at the top, a couple of pockets and it’s done. Including the time to get out the sewing machine and put it back after, maybe one hour.

  3. Making a few of these this week! Such a great Solution for storing our glasses, cell phones, flashlights, ect., when we finally crash in our “little” camper at night after enjoying the great outdoors! Will let you know how they come out.
