She-Explores Celebrates Wild-and-Free Women On The Road

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

She-Explores celebrates the women who live and travel the road in their vans, trailers, teardrops and Airstreams. Various women travelers are featured on the website accompanied by beautiful photographs and in-depth interviews of life on the road.

Traveler and photographer Gale Straub founded She-Explores after coming back from spending 10 months traveling North America in a Dodge Sprinter van and deciding that women campers needed a forum to share their own travel stories.

Jessica Gonzalez, one of the Women on the Road, lives full time in her Vanagan.

Some of the women travelers live full-time out of their vans or trailers. Jessica Gonzalez of Live. Work. Wander. lives out of a 1991 VW Vanagon with her husband. Her tips for living on the road include not staying in campsites (they stealth camp when they can) and keeping your mobile living space organized.

Jess and her husband design for non-profits out of a Scamp trailer.

Jess lives out of a renovated Scamp trailer with her husband and provides crowd funding design work to nonprofits, artists and small companies in need. Their traveling studio is nicknamed DesignEgg and also serves as a house for their pit bull mix, Pickle. They chose the Scamp because of its lightweight 1,800 lbs. and its affordability.

Tess and her boyfriend quit their jobs to travel to Argentina in a Westfalia van.

Tess and her boyfriend Dillon quit their corporate jobs, refurbished a 1975 VW Westfalia and are traveling from Alaska down to Argentina. They broke down twice during the first three days of their trip, but feel that having their house with them wherever they go is the epitome of freedom.

Other Women of the Road, like Katie of Crepe Attack, are featured on the site.

The site also profiles various camping landmarks like the national parks of the west, the Florida Keys, the wild islands of the Northeast, and the best places to visit in Canada. The site also dedicates sections to camp cooking and to female artists who represent the wild and free. She-Explores also has a page of camping and road travel essentials like Eno Doublenest Hammocks, Kelty down sleeping bags and some great hiking boots by ECCO.
