This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

4. The Simple

If you’re looking to minimize cost at the expense of luxury, you’ll probably want to build your teardrop on a simple utility trailer.

The Simple is meant to be built on a standard 4′ by 8′ utility trailer. Harbor Freight makes great utility trailers that are popular with the DIY camper crowd.

Other simple materials used in the construction:

  • 1/4″ plywood for the front, top and back
  • 1/2″ plywood for the sides and main frame
  • 3/4″ plywood for the floor

You could adjust the overall weight of the trailer by using thinner or heavier sheets of plywood and more or less ribbing in the construction.

With simple plastic windows and wooden doors, this design is easy to build, light, and cheap.
