Two Japanese students are responsible for one of the most innovative custom RV designs I have seen considering the resources they had at their disposal. They did however have the luxury of building this custom RV from scratch based on an old Toyota service truck which they were able to get a low price. After seeing the photo of it below it will become clear why that’s the case. They then built every other piece of the custom RV from scratch. It took the pair over 2 years to complete the project. The motivation for their creation was to spend a year traveling across Japan in their very own custom built RV.
I wish I had that kind of motivation when I was their age. I think in some ways this design could influence designs from RV manufacturers to find more creative use of space. In particular the way the second floor is fabricated through the use of hydraulics to raise a hinged wall to create a bedroom and expose double doors and a makeshift deck. This Toyota Custom RV comes equipped with the typical amenities that RV’ers have come accustomed to such as power hookups, holding tanks, plumbing, etc.

They have since departed and returned from their trip and you can see more photos of the custom RV and the trip they embarked on at their website. You can also have a look at a video below to show the custom RV Toyota mechanism in use to create the second floor in real time!
