Save Space With These Hanging Storage Ideas
Everyone knows that RVs are not exactly large living spaces and storage space is at a premium. This leaves many of us searching for creative ways to use the space we do have to create new storage solutions. In many cases, this means using hanging storage options.
While RVs don’t have a ton of floor space, and many have limited cabinet space, there is always room to hang things from the ceiling. On top of that, many rigs have empty wall space that isn’t being used, and most RVs have at least one door that could be used for hanging storage.
Wondering what hanging storage options might work well in your RV? You’ve come to the right place. In this article, we will discuss our favorite hanging storage solutions for trailers and motorhomes.
First, let’s talk about the easiest way to use your wall space to hang things like towels, jackets, and bags. Hooks are the obvious solution here, but not everyone feels comfortable drilling into their RV walls. Some people are afraid they might hit wiring; others just don’t want to ruin the walls.
Whatever your reasoning might be, if you’re not comfortable drilling into your RV, you’ll be happy to know there is a way to put hooks on your wall without using screws or nails. Command hooks will stick to your wall using strong adhesive, or in some cases, hook-and-loop fasteners. The larger options are able to hold a surprising amount of weight and can be removed down the line without damaging the wallpaper.

Magnetic knife rack
Next, we will head into your RV kitchen. Some of the most difficult things to store safely in your RV are knives. You don’t want these floating around in a drawer waiting to cut your fingers, but it also isn’t feasible to keep a knife block on the counter. This is where the magnetic knife rack can help!
Magnetic knife racks can be hung inside a cabinet door, on the side of a cabinet, or on a wall. A strong magnet ensures your knives stay in place even during travel, and having them hanging neatly means you can find the knife you need when you need it.
Wall-mounted spice rack
Another fantastic hanging storage idea for your RV kitchen is the wall-mounted spice rack. There are tons of versions of these spice racks, but really, any one of them will do the trick. Like the knife rack, the mounted spice rack can be placed inside a cabinet or on a wall. It will hold your spices neatly in place as you travel, and it makes finding the right spices a cinch.
Mounted spice racks can actually be used for other things as well. There are some on the market that happen to make perfect bookshelves! Hang one at the end of each of your kids’ bunks and stick a few of their favorite reads inside for easy access.
Hanging fruit basket
Have you ever had your fruit roll around and become damaged during travel? This is definitely a frustrating thing to find after parking your RV, especially if you were looking forward to a crisp apple or juicy orange once you’re stopped.
Fortunately, there is a great solution to this common problem, and it doesn’t involve using any of your counter space. Hanging fruit baskets from the ceiling of your RV (or the underside of a cabinet) will offer an ideal place to store fruit and keep it safe as you drive.
This solution can also be used to store other small items such as craft supplies, keys, etc.
Stuffed animal hammock
If you travel with kids, you almost certainly have some stuffed animals in your rig. In this case, a stuffed animal hammock might be the perfect storage solution for you. This mesh hammock hangs from the ceiling and allows you to toss your kids’ fuzzy friends into a nice little napping place until it’s time for them to be played with.
Even if you don’t have kids or stuffies onboard your RV, a mesh hammock can come in handy. These nets can be used to store extra pillows and blankets, coats and outdoor gear, and even dirty clothes. You just want to be sure you don’t put too much weight in the hammock.
Pocket file organizer
Pocket file organizers are perfect for hanging in your main living area and storing important papers. That said, many people have found other uses for these hanging pockets as well.
You might use your hanging pocket organizer to hold the family’s tablets, or you might hang it near the door and put things like bug spray, sunscreen, and keys inside. Whatever you use the organizer for, you’re sure to appreciate how it keeps everything organized while consuming hardly any space.
Over-the-door organizers are another great idea for hanging storage in an RV. There are over-the-door hooks that can hold bags and towels, as well as over-the-door shoe organizers that can hold shoes, toiletries, or toys. We also like over-the-door basket organizers for clean towels and other larger options.
One of the best things about over-the-door organizers is that they do not need to be screwed into place and can be changed out easily. They’re also nice because they take otherwise unused space (the back of the door) and make it super useful!
IKEA “TRONES” Storage Boxes
We’re huge fans of IKEA’s “TRONES” shoe storage boxes. These wall-mountable boxes are slim enough that they don’t stick out and get in the way, but they are still large enough to store shoes, toys, or clothing. They tip open, so it’s easy to access the stuff inside, and the tops of the boxes have a nice lip, meaning you can store things there as well.
Hanging shower caddy
RV showers never have enough places to put your things. On top of that, many campers find themselves lugging their shower stuff to the bathhouse now and then. These situations can both be made better by a hanging shower caddy.
Simply hang your caddy in the RV shower to hold your shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Then, if you find yourself heading to the RV park shower, you can grab the caddy and have everything ready to go in an instant!
As you can see, there are plenty of ways you can use hanging storage to keep your RV organized, even when cabinet space is limited. Which options will you add to your home-on-wheels?
