In the summer of 1957, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams lived in the windmill at Stony Brook.

It was here that he wrote the one-act play, The Day on Which a Man Dies, partially in response to death of his friend, the iconic painter Jackson Pollock.
