Pill Case Portable Spice Rack for Camping Chefs and Outdoor Cooking

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

It seems that cooking and cooking well are becoming more and more popular for RV campers. We have seen many examples where the guys and gals are becoming master RV chefs or are mastering their baked goods from the confines of an RV kitchen (or some other variation!). The more elaborate of a meal, dish, or item you try to make, then many times the more ingredients that it requires. If you are full-time in your RV then you no doubt have a well stocked kitchen (if needed) as it is your only kitchen. But, what are the part timers and more recreational RV chefs to do? It can be expensive and a poor use of space to have a fully stocked kitchen all the time.

After picking up a very clever tip from reader named Kim P., we decided to give it a try (Have an idea of your own? Submit it to us here). She recommended that RV campers that head out RVing sporadically and intend to make something that requires special spices, that they grab a pill case of some sort and convert it to a on-demand herb/spice organizer. That’s right, a pill organizer doing double duty as a portable spice rack of sorts. Pill cases can vary in size and number of compartments in much the same fashion your meal may require a varying amount of herbs and spices. This is a great alternative to the Tic Tac RV spice rack.

Portable Spice Rack from a Pill Case Photos

The portable spice rack could not be simpler to get started:

  1. All you need a pill case that has enough compartments to fit your needs. A typical weekly case should be enough for most meals and this is the one we chose for our portable spice rack.
  2. Fill each compartment with your chosen herbs and spices. We used a mini spoon for this part.
  3. Close and store in a plastic baggy.
  4. Pack it into your camping gear for the trip.

The only thing to watch out for is the quality of the pill case. Ideally you can get a high quality version that has air tight compartments. The version we purchased was bargain priced and it is not air tight. It may leak some spices and herbs that are finely ground if you turn it over.

Hope you part time RV chefs find this useful, happy camping!
