Let’s face it – unique RV’s are cool.
Many defy logic and have a way of stirring your interest even if you’re not a hardcore RV collector.
We usually find oversized firetruck RV’s, shanty-like trailers, or floating campers.
At first sight, what we have to show you today is nothing out of the ordinary. But upon closer inspection, this is more than just an aging camper, it’s an extraordinarily small fifth wheel camper.
At only 17 ft. long, the Contempo Quantum 5 mini fifth wheel camper is perhaps one of the smallest fifth wheel trailers ever made.
Contempo Quantum 5 Small Fifth Wheel Camper
At only 2,500 pounds and a pin weight of 500 pounds, the Contempo Quantum was designed to be towed by a small truck.
The Quantum 5 had many of the features RV owners have come to love such as:
- tandem axles
- full electrical system
- monitor for fresh/grey/black tanks
- wet bath
- fridge
- TV
- cooktop
- bedroom
- dinette.
The exterior is made of lightweight fiberglass. This made for a slim weight profile but also added a significant amount to the purchase price.
It went to market in 1978 at $9,200 – out of reach for most RV buyers at the time.
As a result, the Quantum 5 was only in production for 3 years after 1978. During that time only 500 were made. As you can imagine very few have survived in good condition and these little trailers have become a neat collector’s item.
Small fifth wheel trailers come up for sale every so often. We were able to find a few sales that took place over the last few years on eBay, several niche RV message boards, and through a listing on craigslist. Sadly, we were unable to find any for sale currently.
Should that change, you can bet it won’t last long. Most of these sales happen in just a week or less.
Nostalgic buyers act fast!
