Camping Mat and Outdoor Rug: Fight Dirt with Clever Engineering from CGear

This post was updated on March 15th, 2024

Is there anything more mystifying than how dust, dirt and sand find their way into EVERYTHING? At times its as if a leprechaun is running around behind me spreading filth up the steps and allover the heavy traffic areas of our RV. Having a traditional camping mat outside or a outdoor rug can prevent a marginal amount of dirt. It wasn’t till we were introduced to the CGear Sand-Free Multimat. The CGear mat is quite unique, aside from being a rugged piece of outdoor camping mat, it also has some space age engineering to it that make it unique. This mat is quite different from your typical camping mat, this mat actually allows sand, fine grain dirt, and dust to fall right through its construction then locks it permanently underneath the mat itself. In other words, it’s a one way street that keeps your shoes, feet, and animals from bringing the loathed filth into your RV.

The CGear Sand-Free multi mat uses clever engineering to minimize the dirt, sand and other small bits of dust that we all come in contact with in our travels. It uses a dual layer construction. Each layer serves a specific purpose. The top layer is designed to let the particles to fall easily through it. The second layers is more intricate and it stops the dirt from pushing back through from the bottom of the camping mat. This design virtually assures you a relatively clean surface for which to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle free from sand, dirt and dust.

The CGear mat was originally developed not for camping, but for military applications. In particular it was used to allow dirt and sand to fall through it but without it coming back up while helicopters landed and departed in military outposts (think of the show M.A.S.H during the intro). The folks from CGear later adapted the technology for civilian use in the form of either a outdoor camping mat or a beach rug. The camping MAT is designed to be staked down for an extended period of time. It comes with D rings so to make it easily to secure to the ground with stakes. The MAT comes in three sizes, Small (6ftx6ft), Medium (8ftx8ft), and Large (10ftx10ft). CGear says this should be used for outdoor living to create a sand free zone around any area. The second version is referred to as the RUG which has a smooth top layer and is designed to be used at the beach and to essentially replace a beach towel. The RUG comes in 1, 2, and 4 person sizes.

If you are not yet intrigued by this technology then perhaps the CGear Beach Tote Bag will get you excited. It’s the same technology used only to create a beach bag where sand falls through it but cannot enter it from the outside. Pictured below.

To us it seems to be obvious that the MAT is the most useful for most RV’ers and technically could be used in many capacities if needed. We think this technology is fantastic and something that many RV’er will find useful, especially those with pets and or children around the campsite. The only downside that we have observed is the issue of wet sand, dirt, or dust. This mat doesn’t do much for wet stuff. Once it dried it falls through much like it should but if you have a wet campsite this could offer very little if any benefits. Though not a deal breaker its important to note that this will not totally replace a conventional rug when there are wet feet or paws with dirt on them.
