Swap Out A Bulky RV Bedroom TV For Additional Storage Or Keep Both

Have an aging RV with a tube TV? Consider swapping the old CRT for a newer LCD TV, and adding a storage area with the newfound space.

It’s probably best we start by recognizing that most people enjoy the television in their RV. TVs are great for movies, news, and just generally passing the time. Especially on those rainy days!

So let’s assume that you like your TV, but you want to find another way to add more storage space to your RV. If you’ve been looking for some extra storage spaces that you can access with ease, perhaps you need not look further than your TV. In particular we’re talking about those tube TV’s (CRT or cathode ray tube TVs) that have seemingly become extinct over the past few years.

Keith from Geeky Explorers, who seems to be quite handy, decided to remove the TV in his RV’s bedroom and build an additional storage space where the TV used to sit. Keith and his wife aren’t big TV watchers, so there was no big loss in this case. In lieu of the TV, Keith added partitioned storage designed to house unused shoes. The result was a great looking area full of cubby holes, perfect for storing shoes or other small items.

Remove a Bedroom TV for Additional Storage In Your RV

Knowing that many RV owners are going to turn their nose up at losing a TV space, we thought an alternative would be putting the casing together to form a door, which would be held on one side by a heavy duty hinge (for example, a piano hinge). This would grant access to the storage area but allow enough rigidity to install a smaller LCD TV on to the outside of the door.  A great example of the use of the piano hinge is shown below.

All that would be needed is some kind of latch on one side of the door to keep it secure while in transit or not in use. This idea is ideal for older tube TV’s but could also prove to be useful for some of the flat screen TV nooks that are recessed into the wall or cabinet that come standard on more modern RV’s.

I’ve done this mod and have seen many original installations where the whole TV is held on by the 4 screws on the back and the screw inserts in the plastic on the back of the TV have given away and the TV fallen off the wall after only a few miles down the road. The solution is to have the weight of the TV rest on a small shelf on this door. Remember to leave space for the speakers to let the sound through as well. As an other note, be prepared to put a number of access holes in the door so you can get at the cable and accessory connections. Making sure that you have the angle of the TV right is also important if the TV is up high in the bedroom.
