There unfortunately is not a perfect procedure for connecting your utility RV hookups. You do however need to have a process that prevents contamination, keeps anyone from being harmed, and keeps you from getting all wet (it’s not always just water…).
I atteneded a new RV’er workshop recently at a RV show just for fun and heard a great method for how to look at RV hookups. A-B-C. Awareness, Back it in/Drive it in, and Connect. It couldn’t be simpler and the rest of this article will work off the A-B-C’s of RV hookups.
Awareness
- Be sure to get a spot in a campground that has the appropriate RV hookups for your type of rig and has enough room to accommodate the size. (The coveted pull through sites are always a plus!)
- Find the site hookups and see if you can keep the sewer connection as close to the RV as possible.
- Have a look around the site before pulling in to get a good feeling for how you want to be positioned.
- You RV should have the door side pointing toward the available space where you can have tables, chairs, and possibly a campfire.
- Watch out for overhead issues like tree limbs. Watch that satellite dish dome if you have one.
Back, or Drive In
- After getting a good feel for the site you can now back in or drive in as you have decided.
- Driving in is preferable for new RV’ers. Backing in can be a challenge, if you’re traveling alone ask for help from the park staff if necessary.
- It’s perfectly acceptable to do the “stop, park, get out, look, and go”.
- Once parked, start leveling your RV. Use the built in system if you have one otherwise you will need leveling blocks.
Connect
- Connect Water. Unwind your hose and connect it to the tap just like at home. Some parks may require a water pressure regulator
- Connect your sewer line with a Sewer Hose. Ideally there will be no low spots and have a sloping grade to the sewer connection. You can use sewer hose supports to make that process simpler. It’s not usually necessary to leave the dump open all the time. Most people dump only when needed then ensure the hose is empty to avoid clogs.
- Connect Electric. Unwind the cord and plug it in. Most RV hookup boxes require you to flip a switch to turn on the power. Make sure you’re using the appropriate size and capacity cord for your application. Find more detailed information on RV Electrical Systems.
