Anyone towing a camper should know the importance of trailer tongue weight. It can make the difference between a smooth ride and a potentially dangerous crash on the highway.
Unevenly distributing your cargo, having too small of a tow vehicle, and driving too fast can all cause your trailer to sway (and wreck), as one RVer recently learned.
Truck driver and Youtube user Ramathorn1985 was heading eastbound on Interstate 82 in Washington State when a speeding camper flew past him and began swaying out of control.
The trailer and tow vehicle crashed, leaving behind a huge cloud of dirt. The driver, who was fully loaded at 104,000 lbs with rebar at the time, was able to slowly but safely come to a stop shortly after.
Thankfully nobody was injured, and the entire incident was caught on video:
Weight distribution is essential for safe towing. You may also want to invest in sway bars for more support. Check out this post for more info on why trailer tongue weight matters.
