See Inside The Ultimate Montana RV Renovation

RV renovations have gained popularity in recent years, as more and more people want a custom home on wheels that suits their personal needs and preferences over a standard manufactured RV with the same basic features.

After months of searching for the perfect fifth wheel, founder of The Flipping Nomad, Cortni Armstrong, decided to renovate an RV herself. “That experience made me think that other people might not like the standard interiors too, and thus, The Flipping Nomad was born,” she says.

Since then, her mom Patti has joined the team to transform old RVs into fabulous tiny homes. The mother-daughter team specializes in Keystone Montana fifth wheels and has beautifully renovated several models including the 2011 Montana 3580RL, 2006 Montana 3000RK, 2009 Montana 3605RL, and 2010 Montana 3075RL.

Most recently, The Flipping Nomad teamed up with Keystone RV to create a concept RV with high-end features never seen before in the industry. The Ultimate Montana, towed behind a 2020 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Denali Dually, is like the multimillion-dollar RV we have always dreamed of with a clawfoot tub, a projector TV, and not one, but three ultrasonic water vapor fireplaces.

The RV was equipped with state-of-the-art gear thanks to several sponsors, including a solar install from Future Solutions and batteries from Battle Born Batteries. Dometic also supplied a kegerator, outdoor kitchen, slide toppers, and awning to complete the tailgating setup.

The renovated kitchen

The upgraded fifth-wheel kitchen has all the features of a modern home including a residential-style fridge and a gorgeous backsplash on the wall. The stove is strategically placed facing the window to provide views of the campsite while cooking inside the RV.

A small counter faces the other window, providing a comfortable place to dine and enjoy the views. With the shades down, a built-in projector TV can also be cast for entertainment.

On the counter above the projector is the first of three water vapor fireplaces supplied by Dimplex. The gorgeous new sheet vinyl flooring can be seen underneath giving the interior a modern and polished look.

An RV bathroom with a tub

Perhaps our favorite part of the Ultimate Montana RV renovation is the bathroom, which houses a cozy clawfoot bathtub and a dreamy shower with a rainfall showerhead. Thanks to the recirculating tankless water heater supplied by Suburban, running out of hot water is never a problem.

What a dreamy place to soak!

The tub features a built-in tray and sits across from a second fireplace for comfort. A bright white counter, marble wall, and vessel sink give the bathroom its clean modern style.

The renovated RV bedroom

A large comfy bed is the centerpiece of the renovated bedroom. The room also houses the third water vapor fireplace and large storage cabinets.

A spacious closet is hidden in the bedroom with extra shelving for shoe storage. This luxurious amount of storage reminds us of the high-end tour bus renovated for country music star Kellie Pickler.

Custom RV renovations by The Flipping Nomad

The Ultimate Montana is just one of many examples of their high-end design work. The Flipping Nomad has renovated several other Montana fifth wheels into modern tiny homes as well. To ensure the best quality possible, they only work with RVs they buy, primarily towables and Keystone fifth wheels. In addition to renovated RVs, they also offer non-renovated RVs for those who want to be assured they have a fully functional RV before renovating it themselves.

Each RV, renovated or not, goes through a two-part inspection process. First, they perform a field inspection and check the seals, roof, tire condition, wear and tear, water damage warning signs, and layout functionality. The second part of the inspection is taken care of back at the shop. According to their website,

“If it passes the initial inspection, and we purchase it, we bring it home to The Flipping Nomad shop and do a further inspection. This inspection is a PDI (or Pre Delivery Inspection). It is a standard procedure in the industry. The PDI puts all seven elements of the RV through specially designed stress tests.

We are certified technicians for this inspection. In addition, we pull up strategic sections of the flooring to inspect the sub floor and take the ceiling vents apart to inspect the decking of the roof. This is to check for water damage. This is not a standard PDI procedure, however, we do it as an additional check point for our clients.”

Once the inspection is complete, they produce a Condition Report that outlines the condition of all the RV systems. When an RV renovation is almost done, they will email out the Condition Report, as well as the pricing, projected completion date, and a list of what features can be customized, to those who are interested. The renovated RVs are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

They provide all new RVers with a how-to course on how to safely operate everything in their new rig. Even if you don’t purchase an RV, they offer one-on-one coaching on the RV lifestyle and RV renovations for newbies.
